Our Mission

Slack Farms Foundation upports the work of Slack Farms as an independent 501(c)3 charitable organization, including Slack Farm’s programs of Internships, Workshops and Trails at Woodlawn Farm and Jubilee Farm in St. Mary’s County, Maryland.

Slack Farms Internships

Slack Farms Internships began twelve years ago when three students from HBLA Elmberg College in Linz, Austria joined us as our first WOOFER (World Organization of Organic Farmers) interns. Today we have over 50 alumni from Austria, Ukraine, and the U.S. who have spent 4 weeks in our summer internship program. If you are interested please send an inquiry to us here. In 2022 we began a special Ukrainian Internship program to accommodate the Ukrainian students studying in the U.S. who have been challenged to return home during semester breaks due to Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Slack Farms Foundation is seeking a program director to support our interns program. Please let us know if you are interested or know someone who might be for the following position:

A Program director is sought to support our interns program. Projects are related to farm skills training. Knowledge of basic agricultural skills and specific language fluency in English, Ukrainian and German is necessary to coordinate and oversee the residential experience of WOOFER interns from the U.S. as well as Austria and Ukraine.

SlackWorks

SlackWorks grew out of a USDA Rural Business Development grant emphasizing farm-based skills taught in small workshops. Our interns make these programs possible, through landscape and garden planning and management by employing small tools and equipment efficiently and safely. We have developed teaching modules useful from rural farms to urban homes. We also offer community members the opportunity to join us regularly for our workshops as well as trail walks (see Walk the Farms below).

Walk the Farms

Walk the Farms is a partnership of small farms who welcome visitors to experience the time-honored tradition of walking the farm. This is a new program just underway with Slack Farms in the lead, thanks to a grant from the Maryland Department of Commerce Office of Tourism. A full 5k trail at Woodlawn and Jubilee Farms will eventually include trails markers, bridges and points of interest signage.

Spend a day by yourself or join a trail outing at Woodlawn’s WALK THE FARMS: starting at the Twin Trees Garden, through the River Bamboo, then out into the open and back into woods where the 1957 Chevy is half-sunk in the marsh, then to the Slack Ukrainian Forest, and to the site of the Six Bridges Woods, then along the byway to the Flapdoodle Pines, before heading home where the Cattywampus Bridge is underway. WALK THE FARMS is an adventure in farm country splendor!
